Submission Rules
- The deadline for submissions is Sunday, October 6th, 2024 (23:59 PST). This is an “in our hands” date, any videos received after this time cannot participate in the contest but may qualify for Overflow.
- All entries must have premiered publicly on or after October 23th, 2023.
- Anyone is allowed to enter up to eight (8) videos into the AMV contest. You may not have more than one (2) videos in the same category, and you can not win more than one category.
- The Coordinator and prescreeners may determine that a video belongs in a category other than its original submission category. If the editor has already submitted two (2) videos to the new category, the video that scores lowest at the pre-screening will be removed from competition and only participate in Overflow.
- Videos must be submitted through our online submission form.
- Members of Another Anime Con staff are eligible to submit to the contest so long as they are not involved in the pre-screening or judging of the contest.
Content Rules
- The video must be composed exclusively of anime produced in Japan, FMV footage from Japanese-produced video games, and/or Cartoons drawing clear inspiration from the anime style. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis by pre-screeners and contest coordinator. Examples of cartoons inspired by anime include but not limited to: The Daily Life of the Immortal King, Avatar ATLA/Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Samurai Jack.
- Videos must be between a minimum of thirty (30) seconds and a maximum of five (5) minutes in length.
- Content shall be held to a ratings standard of PG. Excessive profanity, excessive graphic violence, and erotic nudity are prohibited.
- Audio from English dubs is prohibited – this is a copyright matter and no exceptions will be made.
- Entries should not contain any title screens, logos, credits, or introductions before, during, or after the actual video. All title screens, logos, credits, or introductions before and/or after the actual video will be cut from the screening and replaced with AAC’s standard title screen. Entries containing credits during the video may be disqualified or have the credits removed at the Coordinator’s discretion.
- Videos must not contain the following: Watermarks, subtitles (except those created by the editor specifically for the video), or other visual flaws that detract from the quality of the AMV. This includes partially obscured or cropped watermarks and subtitles.
- Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any entry found to be in violation of this rule will result in immediate disqualification of the offender from the contest as well as all future AAC AMV contests. The offender’s information will also be shared with the coordinators of other contests, who may take further action at their discretion.
- Videos violating any of these rules may be disqualified from the contest at the discretion of the Coordinator.
Technical Rules
- AMVs must be submitted to the contest through our online submission form.
- Our video playback system can handle a wide variety of formats, but for your best results, we recommend the following settings:
- Resolution: 1920×1080 for widescreen; 1440×1080 for fullscreen.
- Frame Rate: 23.976 frames per second
- Video Codec: H264, 2 mbps or higher
- Audio Codec: AAC, 160 kbps or higher
- Audio Sampling Rate: 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz
- Container: MP4
- The maximum file size for a video is 1000 MB.
- Videos with resolution lower than 640×480 or audio sampling rates lower than 44.1 kHz will be disqualified.
- File names should be formatted as follows: EditorName_VideoName_AnimeSource_AudioSource.<ext>
Contest Rules
There will be up to Four (4) categories this year:
1. Action/Adventure 2. Fun/Comedy/Upbeat 3. Drama/Romance 4. OtherExamples of Other include but are not limited to Trailers and Commercials
- Along with category awards, the awards of The Shinjin Award and Best in Show will be awarded.
- To be eligible for this award, you must NOT have won an AMV contest before October 23rd, 2023.
- *NEW* The Shinjin Award is for the best newcomer to AMV competitions.
- Best in Show is a calculated value, combining pre-screening score totals with various vote metrics.
- Categories will require a minimum of four (4) entries to be included in the final ballot. Should a category not receive four (4) entries, its videos will be merged into other categories at the coordinator’s discretion. We will attempt to keep categories balanced to around five (5) videos each, but this may change due to the number of entries received in each category.
- Finalists will be determined via pre-screening. The Coordinator and prescreeners will narrow down the entries to a maximum of five (5) entries per category.
- AAC attendees will be given ballots at the door prior to the contest screening. The audience will vote for their favorite video in each category as well as for Best in Show.
- Category Winners will be shown at Main Events Saturday night during the Masquerade judging intermission. Best in Show and any Categories that are not shown during judging intermission will be shown at the end of the masquerade.
- If you win in the contest but are not at the awards ceremony, you may pick up your prize at Con Operations before 5PM on Sunday afternoon. Afterward, you may have it mailed to you.
- If you are not in attendance at AAC, you may designate a proxy to claim the prize for you. They may pick it up from The Theater after winners are announced. Please contact the Coordinator via email to designate a proxy.
- If you or a proxy are not available to claim your award, the convention will cover the full cost of shipping within the continental US and Canada. Entrants from outside those regions agree to pay one half (50%) of shipping costs for any and all awards won.
- Any Videos submitted may be used for publicity purposes.
